There is a difference between the term REIKI and REIKI RYOHO.
Reiki 靈氣 = Energy of the Universe (Heaven and Earth)
Ryo 療 = Healing / Therapeutic
Ho 法 = Art / Method
Reiki Ryoho 靈氣療法 is the art of hands-on healing by means of channeling the energy of the Universe, and it is a twofold practice, a healing practice and a spiritual practice.
Mikao Usui Sensei, the founder of Reiki Ryoho (healing art or method), attained enlightenment and a healing ability as a godsend was bestowed upon him in 1922 at the age of 57 while he was fasting and meditating on Mt. Kurama in Kyoto, the ancient capital city of Japan. The healing art is named “USUI REIKI RYOHO to improve the mind and body”, and is an inspired art of Usui Sensei, not the outcome of his researches, or discovery, or rediscovery.
Usui Sensei created the hand-on healing art after his enlightenment on the mountain Kurama in March 1922. This method is meant to improve first the mind and then the body (not the body, then the mind); and to guide the practitioner on the personal never ending spiritual path to cultivate and uplift spirituality and the whole being so as to attain the ultimate objective of Reiki Ryoho, i.e., “the absolute INNER PEACE” or “Satori”(enlightenment). This is accomplished by ‘re-membering’ our innate connection to the inexhaustible and unlimited energy of the Universe.
Reiki Ryoho is relatively easy to learn and very simple to practice / use. Anyone can be initiated into Reiki Ryoho and become Reiki practitioner to heal themselves and others. This is done by means of ritual called «Reiju» or «attunement». We begin by rediscovering our natural healing ability. We start by healing ourselves first. We can then share this healing ability with others, developing in us a sense of love and compassion.
There is an ordinary and common misconception that Reiki is something you ‘receive’ during a Reiju (attunement/initiation). It implies that before Reiju, you did not have Reiki, but after Reiju, you have been suddenly given something you did not previously possess. It also implies that Reiki energy is separate from you and that a Reiki practitioner will ‘channel’ Reiki in order to ‘transfer or give the energy’ to a recipient. Since Reiki means the energy of the Universe, you cannot be separated from it, and it cannot be separated from you. You are it, and it is you. This means that you already ‘have Reiki’, it is an inner gift which everyone has been having since their birth. Having a Reiju (initiation/ attunement) simply wakes you up to this fact of your natural ability to heal, from subconscious level to a conscious level. It has always been within you. In a way, it ‘turns on the switch’.
Note: In traditional Japanese way of teaching, Reiju (initiation/ attunement) is transmitted ONLY in-person, not distantly, or by the Internet…
Many people who use the term of Reiki are usually referring to the practice of «Reiki Ryoho» or hands-on healing practice of Reiki.
«Reiki» refers to the inexhaustible energy of the Universe, which can not be defined or confined, while «Reiki Ryoho» is the hands on healing method. This is why Reiki can be said to be a two-fold practice: both the art of spiritual awakening (a path to self-realization) and an energetic healing art.
Gradually, with continued practice, Reiki can guide us to the higher levels of mental clarity, physical wholeness and a harmonious integration of our own being that leads us to experience our true disposition: inner peace, unconditional love, loving kindness, wisdom and compassion for all life.
