霊授 Reiju – spiritual blessings, offerings. One of the essential elements within the system of Reiki Ryoho.
霊授 Reiju – it is Japanese word, which was translated into English as “initiation”or “atunement”.
霊 Rei – means, how to give 授 Ju – means, how to receive
“Initiation is a sacred ceremony where the contact is made, with the first initiation or contact, the hands, radiate vibrations when applied to the ailing part”. Master Takata, states in the “Grey book”.
‘ The initiations are an important part of Reiki training, as the initiations do something energetically to our bodies, the initiation put our bodies in direct contact with this universal life energy, Reiki, in a different way than before so we can utilize it for healing purposes. We get “turned into” or “connected” to the Reiki by means of the initiations.Takata stated the Reiki initiations raise a person’s antenna so that they can pick up this energy we call”Reiki”.
An analogy that could be used is that of radio signals, where our bodies are constantly bombarded with the signals all the time, but we are unaware them and can not hear them. We need to adjust the antenna on our radio receiver to properly tune into these radio signals so we can enjoy the programming being broad cast. Likewise Reiki is everywhere -like the radio waves-and in all living things. But in order to utilize it- like hearing the radio programming, we need our antenna adjusted via the initiations.
In the First class Takata describe ( unpublished audio recording of Takata teachings Reiki ,1980) that Reiki comes in your antenna on the top head, and fills up your “solar plexus”. ( Takata would call the area around and bellow the navel the “solar plexus”, she would also refer it as the “battery”. In the “Gray book” she would state:” Reiki lies in the bottom of your stomach, about 2 inches below the navel.”
This area is a lower tanden. Takata didn’t like to use Japanese words, like tanden to her english speaking audiences, as it tends to create confusion.)From there the Reiki travels up and comes out the practitioner’s hands, which called “electrodes”.(Takata also stated that Hayashi had referred to the hands as electrodes in the article of Graham, Mrs. Takata Opens Minds to ‘Reiki'”.
Takata stated that the more a person practices Reiki, the more it fills up his or her battery. As a result, more Reiki would come out of practitioner’s hands while giving treatments.
Going on, she stated that for the first few days after receiving the Reiki initiation, maybe only a quarter of the energy coming into your antenna would actually come out of your hands; the other tree quarters would be stored in your battery, practitioners are beneficially receiving Reiki while they are giving a treatment too.
Takata went on to say that with more practice, the practitioners battery becomes more charged and therefore more Reiki will come out of the practitioner’s hands when giving treatments. She concluded by saying that she was practicing Reiki for 45 years and therefore a lot of Reiki came out from her hands during the treatment, she emphasized the importance of daily self-treatment. While giving a treatment, it would simply take more time for the transfer of Reiki to happen with a new practitioner than an experienced practitioner.
Before Takata had learned the system of Reiki, she asked Dr. Hayashi why the Reiki practitioners’ hands got hot when she was being treated as a patient in his clinic, Hayashi said that it was because they all had contact with the universal life force and you do not ( Haberly, Reiki 22)
In the first degree class, there are four initiations, each initiation has its own purpose. First initiation makes the initial contact between the initiate and the Universal Life Force Energy- Reiki. The second and third initiations strengthen that connection and ‘power up’ the initiate’s system. The fourth initiation seals in the contact with the divine energy of Reiki so that the initiate will not lose it, even if he or she does not practice for long periods of time. The first initiation activates/energized an energy channel that is already present in the body of each person; however, in the most people this energy channel is inactive- the wiring is there but there is no current running trough it-the switch is off. (The activation of this channel can be attained by many others means besides the Reiki initiation – for example certain Qi Qong practices). The Reiki initiation is simply a guaranteed “short cut” -quick way to activate this energy channel.
When applying Reiki , practitioners use this Cosmic Energy, not their own personal energy. Takata mentioned on her audiotape, without the Reiki initiations, a person uses the energy they were born with and this is dangerous. This will deplete the practitioner and, if they treat enough people, the practitioner will die from using and giving away their own life force energy.( Unpublished audio recording of a first degree class of Takata teaching Reiki 1980).
The practice of Reiki can bring one to a place of wholeness and radiant health.

The Secret of Reiju by FRANS STIENE
Zen Master Jakusho Kwong, in his book “No Beginning, No End – The Intimate Heart of Zen”, states that: “This word ju [授], is very good. ‘To cut’” ‘to open,’ ‘to empty,’ and ‘to receive’ are all expressed by ju.”
It is describes exactly what we experiencing when we perform a Reiju. The empty state of mind, that we also receive at the same time, and that the whole process is about openness because the ego temporarily is cut away.

“Traditionally Reiju 靈授 (initiation) is given in person; face to face.
“Touch” (the laying-on of hands) plays a pivotal role in Reiju process; a series of things we do in order to achieve a particular result. Touch in the form of the laying-on of hands is to impart the healing energy and information to Reiki Ryoho students. There is an unbroken succession of Teachers and Shihans, linked by the sacred touch of Reiju ritual, right back to the founder, Usui Sensei.
Reiju with “touch” — a visual symbol of an unseen transmission of not just of the healing energy but also of the information. Touch is a means of communication, an expression of unity, a bonding of people. It is a key to giving and receiving information and to help us bond.
Is “distant (online) Reiju “possible?
Theoretically it seems possible, for there exists a distant healing in Reiki Ryoho systems. And yet we need to understand that sending Reiki energy from a distance to someone and passing (imparting) Reiki energy and the information on to another is a different story, and that the distant Reiju does lack an important and pivotal factor, that is, “TOUCH.” The pivotal factor of a good old tradition: “in person Reiju” and “touch” must be maintained.”
Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei’s statement from July, 2020.

During Reiki Ryoho (Japanese Healing Art) sessions, some practitioners can be more sensitive than others, some may even feel byosen before a treatment starts. Some have psychic abilities and are able to hear, see or sense things that most people do not. If we experience all that, naturally we are tempted to think that we are doing the healing. We start to analyse what we feel, hear and see. We try to work out where the energy should go and what would be the best way to cure a disease or malfunction of the recipient – all because we sincerely want to help.
Often the question arises: What should we do when we became so sensitive, when we see and hear things, or feel pain in our body or strong hibiki in our hands?
Inamoto Sensei says: “It is all very personal, some people are more gifted than others, more sensitive or skilful. Not everyone has to have such gifts or abilities. It can be very helpful to sense imbalances or health disorders in recipients, but basically, we don’t need anything like that. We are here just to place our hands.”
Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei reminds us that: “Japanese Healing Art of Reiki Ryoho is not about doing or thinking. It is about SURRENDER 100% to the Universe. As Reiki Ryoho practitioners, we DO NOTHING and THINK NOTHING in the way of healing. Reiki knows where to go and how to heal for the highest good of the person. We need to be the purer (cleaner) Reiki channel (conduit) possible. Less ego, more room for love — the healing energy of the Universe.”
Inamoto Sensei’s advice to us is: “Do not get attached to your sensations. Your ego and self-clinging are an obstruction in the channel for Reiki healing energy to travel through. Keep your practice simple: Place your hands, surrender and smile. Reiki Ryoho is the art of surrendering.”

Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, people all over the world have been struggling with all kinds of health issues and mental, emotional and spiritual disorders. Naturally, as Reiki Ryoho (Japanese Healing Art) practitioners, we want to do all we can to serve and support others. We may now be offering distant Reiki healing more often, individually or as part of a group.
Questions often arise around permission and distant healing. Are we allowed to do distant healing without permission? Should we inform recipients? Is it appropriate to send Reiki to someone without asking them? Could it cause bad karma?
Actually, the answer might be quite simple. Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei always says: “Reiki is the energy of the Universe. It is Reiki that does the fine job of healing. Reiki always works for the highest good of recipient”.
Inamoto Sensei reminds us that we do nothing in the way of healing. As Reiki Ryoho practitioners, we put our ego aside and just surrender to Reiki.
When asked about his own practice, approach, Inamoto Sensei usually answers: “I do distant Reiki healing with permission and without permission. Sometimes we cannot get it, especially when the person is in a coma or emergency room or just simply uncontactable”.
His advice to us is: “Follow your heart — your kokoro. If you feel more comfortable with permission, please ask for permission. But if it’s not possible to get a permission, remember that Reiki always works for the highest good with permission or without permission. Trust Reiki”.
